Local Farm Report Fresh Veggies

All About the Slaw: Locally Grown Farm Report

It’s peak season for locally grown cabbage, and while there are many tasty ways to serve them, our favorite way is in fresh, summery coleslaw. Not only is it easy to make, but it’s also a perfect side dish for summer meals, barbecues and parties. First things first — how do you pick the right cabbage? Look for crisp leaves on a heavy, dense head. Avoid yellow or wilted leaves, as this indicates age. Now that you’ve chosen the perfect cabbage, it’s time for slaw! Pick up some red cabbage and try Red Napa Cabbage Slaw. Or sweeten things up with Green Apple Slaw or Cherry, Orange-Jalapeno Slaw.

Be sure to check your Heinen’s for even more locally grown produce, displayed in the front of the Produce Department, which transforms into a local Farmer’s Market each summer thanks to our relationships with our Ohio and Illinois farmers (some of whom have been supplying us with tasty fruits and veggies for three generations!)

We’ll keep you updated on what’s available from these and other farms as the season goes on with your Locally Grown Farm Report! (Availability may vary from store to store depending on weather conditions and demand.)
