Is Hemp the next big thing?

People have been using hemp for body care, clothes, food, medicine and more since 8000 BCE–when hemp was considered essential in everyday life. In fact, Thomas Jefferson wrote the draft of the Declaration of Independence on Hemp paper. Even though much has changed over the years, hemp seeds and oil still boast many benefits that lead to optimal health.

Hemp is commonly grouped with marijuana, however, it actually comes from a different variety of the Cannabis sativa plant. Hemp has little to no tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC) and what is present is removed. The seeds can be consumed orally or cold-pressed to make the oil, which is used both orally and topically.

The Benefits of Hemp

Hemp is exceptionally nutrient-rich. The seeds and oil are about 30% fat, and rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They are also a great source of vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulfur, vitamin E and zinc. Hemp also contains arginine and gamma-linolenic acid which is known to reduce heart disease risks.

What’s more, is hemp seeds and oil are a great source of plant-based protein. Two to three tablespoons provide about 11 grams of protein–making them a complete protein source. Additionally, hemp is high in fiber and great for digestive health. It’s no wonder it has been in use for thousands of years.

Hemp is incredibly healthy and can be used in a few different ways.

Hemp seeds and oils have a nutty taste and add a flavorful kick to recipes. Hemp seeds are delicious raw, cooked or roasted, and are the perfect addition to any nut bar or granola. Further, hemp oil is great as a salad dressing. Here’s a simple recipe.

Hemp Oil Salad Dressing

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Hemp oil
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic chopped or minced
  • 1/8 tsp pepper

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients until well mixed.
  2. Set aside for one hour to allow for increased flavor.
  3. Drizzle over salad or vegetables.
  4. Enjoy!

Hemp oil used orally…

  • Can reduce the inflammation that contributes to cancer and heart disease.
  • Decreases PMS and menopause symptoms.
  • Can inhibit the growth of various bacteria.
  • Slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Hemp oil used topically…

  • Is a noncomedogenic moisturizer.
  • Relieves dry skin.
  • Is known to improve acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
  • Helps make skin stronger and more resistant to infections, such as bacterial, fungal and viral.

Is hemp the next big thing? Some would say it already is!
