For the last few years, our wine team has been continually impressed by the fantastic value and delicious taste of wines being made in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula. This destination is a “one-tank-trip” from our stores and has developed a portfolio extends far passed original Icewine. A region that is perfect for cool climate grapes, along with beautiful wineries and talented winemakers (not to mention a KILLER farm-to-table food scene that reminds us a bit of Sonoma), we are lucky to have this truly world-class wine region practically in our backyard!
Last year, members of our wine team made the short drive to the Henry of Pelham Winery in St. Catherines, Ontario to partner on a collaboration Cabernet-Merlot celebrating our close (literally!) partnership with this heritage Canadian winery. If you enjoyed this wine last summer, you’ll remember how tasty our partnership became. Early this year, our team and the Speck brothers who own Henry of Pelham, began talking about what wine we would create this year, which then became: The 2019 Henry of Pelham Rosé.
This new summer sipper was crafted to be a wine that “all Rosé fans would enjoy.” An important part of our mission was to make something that was unique, complex and a terrific value. Our team tasted various blends of both red and white grapes assembled by the magic touch of winemaker Lawrence Buhler. After a splash of this and a smidgeon of that, a wine composed of two reds (Pinot Noir and Gamay) and two whites (Pinot Gris and Riesling) was born.
A chilled glass of this Rosé instantly calls to mind a bright summer day, with aromas of fresh cut flowers greeting your nose. A similar note of summer is found on the palate, where perfectly ripe flavors of strawberry, raspberry and fresh picked dark cherries provide a complex treat. The same flavors lead to a finish that is vibrant, fruit-forward and crisp. It basically begs for another sip, and another, and another…

The ultimate food pairing – a perfect sandwich for Rosé!
We are particularly fond of serving Rosés with ‘summer’ foods like fresh salads and grilled chicken. Trust us – they are tasty dance partners! However, there’s an ultimate (and stunningly simple) treat that is one of the most perfect food and wine pairings imaginable. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 oz. slice prosciutto (about 4 slices)
- ½ to 1 Tbsp. unsalted butter
- ½ fresh Heinen’s baguette
Simply cut the baguette in half lengthwise and spread butter evenly across the bread halves. Loosely drape the prosciutto slices over the butter. Seal with the top half of the baguette. Pour a glass of Henry of Pelham Rosé and be prepared for a sublime treat you won’t believe. The rich and salty flavors of the sandwich highlight the profound, ripe fruit notes in the wine to create a simply incredible flavor combination.
