January is filled with talk of resolutions, diets and cleanses. There are many components to “cleansing” and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, wonder where to begin or what type of cleanse is right for you. To eliminate the guesswork, Heinen’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Todd Pesek, M.D. shares some of his favorite tips for starting and completing a successful cleanse and recommendations to help you reach your wellness goals all year long.
- Get some rest.
We have two functional systems that run in parallel to one another. The first is our day-to-day “Rest and Digest” function. The second is our “Repair and Rejuvenate” function which often takes a backseat. Sleep is a universal tonic and plays a critical role in your overall health, so be sure to get enough rest to support these mission critical processes. Also, take care to note that going to bed on an empty stomach is important for optimal repair and rejuvenation.
- Stay hydrated.
When we sleep, we can lose up to a liter of water, and while it’s important to keep hydrated throughout the day, every day, it’s especially vital to make hydration a priority during your cleanse.
A great strategy to put in place this new year is to drink water as soon as you wake up. Dr. Todd recommends trying to drink at least a liter of water throughout your morning. You can also give your water an added boost of nutrients by juicing a lemon into it.
- Don’t eat until you’re hungry.
It’s easy to mindlessly snack while you’re sitting at your desk during the day or bored at home. If you’re constantly eating, similarly to going to bed on a full stomach, your body’s digestive functions are working on overdrive. It’s important to give your body time for repair and rejuvenation. This is why intermittent fasting throughout the day is good for you.
- Be Mindful.
We often make the mistake of focusing solely on our physical health, but it’s important to remember that’s just one element of our overall wellness. This year, make your mental health a priority by reminding yourself to be optimistic, grateful and present in the moment.
Surround yourself with people who lift you up and motivate you. Make time for yourself during the day. Even taking a walk and breathing in fresh air can help stimulate your overall wellness.
Heinen’s Juice Cleanse for Beginners:
Heinen’s Blend Organic Cold Pressed 6 Juice Cleanse focuses on total body preparation, balancing and recovery—formulated by Dr. Todd these have years of clinical successes behind them.
If you’re new to cleansing, Dr. Todd recommends a 1-3 day juice fast (3-6 juices a day for 1-3 days). The first day of your cleanse may be a challenge since you’ll notice that you’re hungry, but by day 3 you’ll be feeling energized and rejuvenated! During your 3 day juice fast (cleanse), you can also drink water and herbal teas throughout the day.
After completing your cleanse, it is important to break your fast properly in order to comfortably return to your regular diet. Start by easing your way back into solid foods with vegetable broth or a simple salad with light dressing.
To stay on the right track after your cleanse, make sure you are incorporating nutrient-dense foods and superfoods into your diet.
Before starting a cleanse, we always recommend talking to your doctor or physician to make sure it is right for you.
