Wellness is more than a simple trend; it is a way of life. But to be well does not require invasive medical care or dramatic lifestyle changes. Heinen’s Chief Medical Officer and Holistic Doctor, Dr. Todd Pesek, M.D. has been spreading this message through his medical practice, books and seminars for years and has been a tremendous influence on the lives of many including former Cleveland Browns football star, Bernie Kosar.
Known for his football career, Kosar embarked on a wellness journey with Dr. Todd nearly a decade ago and has since restored his quality of life through simple, healthy lifestyle changes. Heinen’s had a chance to sit down with Kosar and Dr. Todd to learn about their wellness journey, their insightful books and the lessons we can all learn from their experiences.
It’s important to know how Dr. Todd and Kosar found one another. In the late 1990s, after a physically demanding football career, Kosar began noticing concussion symptoms. While he may have looked fine on the outside, inside his ears were buzzing, he felt lethargic and sometimes went 72-96 hours without sleep. He attributes these symptoms to the unhealthy physical demands, stress and eating patterns he experienced during his football career.
Wanting a healthier life, but unable to commit to demanding diet and exercise regimens, Kosar was introduced to Dr. Todd through a friend. Within a few days of working with Dr. Todd, Kosar knew this was the lifestyle that was going to work for him. For the first time, he wanted to stick with a program because of the simple solutions and accountability that Dr. Todd offers. There are no complicated medical terms or procedures. Kosar knows exactly what Dr. Todd is giving him and he believes in healthy living through smart supplementation and a diet rich in superfoods
What did Dr. Todd do to change Kosar’s life? Kosar has discovered the value of partaking in daily physical activity, but rather than hitting the gym, he gets outside. Dr. Todd recommends mixing physical activity with nature. Shoveling the Cleveland snow, walking parks or trails or building snowmen are some of Kosar’s favorite physical activities.
Additionally, with the help of Dr. Todd, Kosar has altered his diet by limiting fatty meats, chips and dips and increasing his consumption of superfoods. This may sound challenging, but Kosar says it simply takes an open mind and an awareness of the snacks that are good for you. Now, Kosar raves about kale smoothies and almost always has nuts and seeds nearby for a snack.
In making these simple lifestyle changes Kosar has seen a life-altering difference in his concussion symptoms. Thanks to a healthy diet, regular sleep and outdoor activity, he notices improved mental clarity, reduced aches and pains, more energy and an overall healthier physical appearance.
Dr. Todd and Kosar both find it important to spread their messages of simple, healthy living to inspire others to live their best.
