Thanksgiving meals are full of favorites like turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and pumpkin pie. Individuals with dietary restrictions may find it tricky to locate alternatives for the feast they wait all year to enjoy. Time and energy are a commodity during the holidays and having to scan labels and translate lists of ingredients becomes that much more frustrating.
Did you know that each Heinen’s store has a resource who is ready to walk you through the aisles and locate products that fit your lifestyle? Heinen’s Wellness Consultants can provide tours of the store and point out alternative options to meet your dietary needs. Find out more.
Gluten-Free Holiday Reminder
My family has been gluten free for 25 years – lots of experience finding foods to fit our lifestyle! Something to remember, whether you’re hosting a get together or bringing a dish: prepare gluten-free items first and then cook anything containing gluten. Gluten is found in grain, so when using regular flour it can easily be transferred to other utensils and food.
Gluten-Free Food to Serve
The easiest way to know you’re serving gluten-free food? Use whole ingredients that are free from grain. Otherwise, when you’re in store look for these shelf buttons identifying gluten-free products.
Here are a few ideas to get you started*:
- Honeysuckle White® Frozen Whole Turkey
- Imagine® Foods’ Gravy (ready-made)
- Ian’s Homestyle Stuffing
- Heinen’s Cranberry Relish
- RP’s Pasta Company – great for making a vegetarian & gluten-free lasagna option!
- Kinnikinnick Panko Style Bread Crumbs
- Katz Pies – Apple & Pumpkin
- Mi-Del Pie Crusts
- Morton & Bassett Spices – select items; check individual label
- 1-2-3 Multi-Purpose Fortified Flour Mix – my favorite!
- Against The Grain Baguettes
When it comes to beverages, Heinen’s Wine & Beer Consultants are happy to help you locate gluten-free beer & wine. Hard cider is always a great option, too!
Easy Gluten-Free Pie Crust
Mix together crushed Heinen’s Ginger Snaps & melted butter (enough to make it stick together) and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees to set the crust.
Quick Mix: Make Your Own Gravy
Add gluten-free cornstarch to thicken the leftover juice from cooking your turkey. Let it reduce, then enjoy!
