How to Make Healthy Choices at the Grocery Store

Making healthy choices at the grocery store is easier than you think. Although the majority of your shopping trip should be spent in the produce department, there are plenty of healthy staples that can be found in the inner aisles as well.

Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind the next time you’re shopping: 

1.When choosing bread, try a sprouted bread with no high fructose corn syrup.

2. Grains are another shelf-stable item that you can have in your pantry, ready to go for a quick meal. Some of my favorite grains are quinoa, wild rice and brown rice.

3. You don’t have to forget about snacks! Just be a little smarter about your choices. Some of my favorite snacks include roasted lentils, crunchy chickpeas and sprouted flaxseed crackers. If you’re in the mood for a chip, try a coconut flour-based tortilla chip.

4. There are three go-to oils that I keep in my kitchen for cooking, baking and dressing my favorite salads. The first is extra virgin olive oil which is great drizzled over cooked vegetables. The second is avocado oil. It’s a nice, neutral-flavored oil that can be used in baking and also for salad dressings. If you’re looking for a high heat cooking oil, coconut oil is wonderful for sauteing, roasting and even for baking.
