We Know Our Sources: Old City Soda

If you live in the Cleveland area, you may be familiar with some of the many local food and drink ventures gaining momentum in the region. We are all about supporting locally made products, so we were just as excited as you when we learned that local favorite Old City Soda was going to take part in CNBC’s Cleveland Hustles this past fall. We were even more excited when they were announced as one of the winners!

How It All Started

Founders and cousins Mike Gulley & Sean Adkins originally named the enterprise “Cleveland Soda Works,” but decided to change it to “Old City Soda” in reference to their mothers’ maiden name, “Altstadt,” German for “Old City.” Further inspiration came in the form of the family crest which included a bear. Take a look at their logo and…what’s that on top? A bear drinking a soda.

What began in Mike’s apartment as a hand-bottled product is now bottled by Platform Beer Co. and is, as you may have heard, shelf stable. What that means is, even though it tastes best chilled, you don’t have to store it in the fridge.

Mix It Up

Old City Soda is, as Mike noted, “a craft soda that’s good for mixing.” These carbonated beverages don’t use any preservatives or artificial ingredients. That’s immediately evident when you crack one open and it’s not brightly colored.

Seeing as we’re currently celebrating the citrus season with Zest Fest in all of our stores, we asked for some recipes showcasing Old City’s lemon, grapefruit, & ginger sodas. Give them a try and let us know what you think.
